This limited-edition hummingbird puzzle was created as a fundraiser in support of Defending Our Neighbors Fund, an organization that provides legal aid and counsel to people who have been illegally detained or deported, as well as support for their families.
The hummingbird was chosen with intention. Across cultures, hummingbirds symbolize joy, love, resilience, and hope; essential qualities when standing in opposition to state sanctioned violence and when advocating for human dignity. Despite their size, hummingbirds persist, migrate, and return. They endure.
As Emily Dickinson wrote:
“Hope” is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all
This puzzle is designed as both a meaningful object and a tangible act of support. It is handcrafted from solid hard maple blocks set within a birch plywood frame, with each piece cut, sanded, painted, and finished by hand. The geometric pieces come together to form a hummingbird in motion, and each puzzle is one of a kind, with natural variations in wood grain and paint that reflect its handmade nature.
The puzzle is painted using Beam Paints, an Indigenous, woman owned company known for their non toxic, artist grade paints, and finished with Natura OneCoat to protect the wood while maintaining a natural feel.
